Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth is a Catholic Residential and Day School for boys. About 100 of the College's 650 students reside in the Hostel there.
Founded in 1959, the college has established itself as a college of quality. The De La Salle Brothers and staff strive to show always concern for each individual student. At Francis Douglas staff and students are urged to care, listen, help and learn together.
The college is named after Father Francis Douglas who was a priest in New Plymouth in 1935 and 1936. He then joined the Columban Fathers and served as a missionary in the Philippines, where he was captured and later killed during the Second World War. The College seeks to carry on and develop in boys the virtues of courage, faith and concern for others that Francis Douglas displayed.
MONOGRAM
The key words on the College monogram are Christo Duce.
They are Latin words which mean 'With Christ As Our Leader.' In everything we attempt to do at College we are reminded that our model, our ideal, is Jesus of Nazareth who was both an amazing human being and the Son of God.
The letters 'DLS' are there too. They are short for De La Salle which is a reminder that the College has St. John Baptist de La Salle as a patron saint. There is also a star on the monogram and that is an age-old symbol of faith.
